Air Conditioning and Heating

Installing a programmable thermostat can help you save energy which of course means money.  According to manufacturers, this can be as much as a third.  This of course depends on the individual.  We have had good success with Honeywell programmable t-stats as they are reliable and are relatively easy to program.  No need to worry about whether you remembered to turn down your air conditioner while you are at work.

Changing air filters regularly is the simplest and most important thing that a homeowner can do to insure the proper performance and longevity of air conditioning and heating equipment.  A clogged filter restricts air flow.  When air flow is restricted, the air conditioner cannot work properly, putting stress on the equipment.  This shortens the life of the air conditioning and heating equipment.  Further, a dirty filter leads to a dirty air conditioning coil.  Cleaning or replacement of the coil is expensive.

Washing down the outside air conditioning condenser is another easy maintenance technique that can be addressed by the homeowner.  The air conditioning coils are exposed to the elements and must be kept clean to function properly.

Having your A/C equipment inspected biannually by a qualified technician can keep your air conditioning system running at peak efficiency.  An air conditioner that is not properly charged will have longer run cycles which results in higher utility cost.  Longer run cylces from unmaintained A/C systems shorten the life of equipment leading to an expensive repair or replacement.

Be careful when mowing around or near the air conditioning condenser.  If the outside condenser is running, any grass or dirt that is stirred up around the unit will be sucked into the air conditioning coil.  Turning off the A/C unit, while mowing, will prevent this from happening.  Additionally, don't blow any dead grass toward the unit whether running or not for the same reasons.

The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient your air conditioning equipment is.  As of January 2006, all air conditioners manufactured in the United States are required to have a SEER rating of 13, as mandated by the U.S. Department of Energy.
